Challenge
The Lake Street Bridge is a double-deck bascule bridge that was built in the early 1900s. The bridge supports two lanes of traffic on its lower level and two Chicago Transit Authority tracks on its upper level. It is comprised of two leaf structures on each side of the river.
The steel superstructure of the Lake Street Bridge was lifted to allow for the repair of some deteriorated steel elements.
Solution
The lifting concept involved the construction of two shoring towers to support and lift each bridge leaf.
Kapur was retained to provide survey and monitor movements in the final stages of rehabilitation to ensure a successful return to operation.
